Free Ryan Jerome…
It’s simply amazing to me that we continue to have these annoying conversations about NYC’s draconian and unconstitutional gun laws. Not only is Ray Kelly endorsing researching a device which covertly scans folks for firearms while they’re walking down the avenue, but it turns out the NYPD are also arresting Marines for checking their home state legal firearms so they may be in compliance with some of the most ridiculous guns regulations on the books anywhere in the lower 48. Look, I have the utmost respect for the NYPD rank and file and their efforts in what is a tough city to say the least. However, this Kelly character and the sickening way he is almost joined at the hip with one of America’s most disingenuous and unaccountable elected officials is really starting to annoy me.
Message to Bloomberg and company: Please quit hassling America’s heroes and playing politics instead of fighting crime in the “Big Apple”. It’s an absolute disgrace that this should even have been an issue. Moreover, it’s appalling that the mayor and his puppet sidekick police commissioner aren’t down at the Manhattan DA’s office strategizing on how to apologize to this Marine Legacy for what should have been treated as nothing more than a simple misunderstanding.

Man, it is just so hard sometimes to have legitimate dialog about the critical issues of our time when we can’t even get this stuff right…Shameful… Hang in there Marine, we got your back!
Eat right and shut up…
A while back I wrote about the little spat between Southern Cooking Bell Paula Deen and “No Reservations” Bad Boy Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain had apparently commented regarding Deen’s cooking style, calling her “the most dangerous person in America”. He was obviously referring to her propensity for cooking high fat/calorie Southern dishes and how that might relate to America’s problems with obesity. Well, the saga continues with a local twist.
It appears that Deen will announce soon that she suffers from (Type 2 Diabetes), something many will attempt to pin squarely on her culinary efforts. Truth be told, and while that is certainly not something to be ignored as a contributing factor, Diabetes and its cause(s) run the gamut from hereditary/genetic to lifestyle and diet. What I’m saying, is this is no secret and Deen herself has repeatedly said she understands moderation as the best approach to any family meal preparation. Example: Super-duper double fudge decadent brownies, (while understandably not something we should be eating after every meal of every day), certainly trump those dry crappy ones made with fake sugar and apple sauce, and can be enjoyed infrequently for sure.
Anyway, my reason for revisiting this topic is not only the revelation by Deen about her condition, but also that one of my local television networks WLNE-ABC Channel 6, broadcast a segment recently which basically implied the reason for Deen’s Diabetes was her cooking, and then quoted Bourdain with no qualifier. Now I’m not going to get into my thoughts about why I think the Liberal media in my home state has a problem with this self-made and successful entrepreneur who happens to be a woman. But I will say, that before anyone makes the case for “cause and effect”, they might want to mention that Bourdain has eaten and promoted more “fat and grease” from around the globe on his own show than any American could consume respectively or consistently without “coding” stiff at age 35. He also smoked regularly and quips often about his life which included frequent drug use among other questionable habits.
Look, I like both of these programs for different reasons. My wife and I borrow and “occasional” tasty recipe from Deen, and we enjoy the travels and condescending analytical style of Bourdain as he traipses the planet in search of culturally unique morsels. So my advice to Channel 6 is simply this; think before you inject any bias your editors or newsroom folks may harbor, into a media war that might just be publicity oriented. Otherwise, you run the risk of showing the true colors you may not have initially wanted to.
“Living up to the Creed”…
No nation in recorded history has done more in it’s time to address the issue of individual human freedom and the socioeconomic tentacles affixed to it, than the United States of America. In so many ways, MLK remains the true face of this continuing effort, in modern America and around the world. Do not be fooled however, by the “false prophets” of our time. Instead be mindful of the lessons of faith, hope and charity this great and “deeply religious” man provided to us, and embrace his message which trumpeted individual freedom and the pride and happiness that comes from unhindered self-reliance. How many of us have truly taken time to listen to his words, and not just those spoken on the mall in August, 1963?
This was truly a great man of vision and understanding. It is unfortunate much of his passion and sensibilities are missing from the argument today…
Tebow…
NFL reality visited Tim Tebow last night in the form of the New England Patriots and a 45-10 shellacking. As a Patriots fan I was thrilled. But I was also moved by the fact that aside from any lessons learned for Tebow, and considering he will most likely start for the Broncos next season, he appeared steady and composed albeit obviously disappointed. This lends itself to what I have said all along. This young man was never praying for the win, just the strength.
In the end, and in only his 16th NFL start, Tim Tebow played with his team in the divisional round of the AFC East Championship and into the hearts of millions of Americans as well. I’d say that’s something he can be very proud of and “thankful” for…

Context…
Pardon me if I do not get all uncomfortable and outraged when I read about some Marines stepping outside the lines a bit in Afghanistan. Look, I am certainly on board with “appropriate” disciplinary action corresponding to the actions of these boys, but let’s apply a little context here. First of all, any thought of placating to the “Islamofascist” element by way “punishment that does not fit the crime” would be foolish and counterproductive. Also, is this the same Taliban that I have written about so many times highlighting the manner in which they treat all who cross their ideological path? What I mean is do I have to run down the list of atrocities these clowns have committed against their own people, to include medieval beheadings, “actual” torture and the targeting of women and children with maiming and often lethal explosive devises to make their point. This is to say nothing of their “treatment” of prisoners of war. I simply do not have the patience for folks who want to gloss over the fact that this group is comprised primarily if not completely of murderers and despots proven capable of the most heinous crimes imaginable against humanity.
Did our boys do wrong, you bet? Might their minds have been a bit clouded with the losses of their friends and compatriots to an enemy who prefers to fight in the shadows by way of deceit and cowardice, absolutely? Punish them accordingly but within the context of a bloody war against a merciless enemy without soul or conscience. But know this, that same enemy is watching closely and will use any overreaction or politically correct notion to embolden their band of murderers. And American soldiers will certainly die as a result of any poorly thought out miscalculation on the part of our apologist leaders. Where is old “Black Jack” when ya need um????
The Journey…
Truthfulness should never be simply a “talking point” bandied about as a means to a personal end, but rather should be simple, instinctive and defensible with fact… “FCJ”
I write stuff like this all the time to remind me of my own faults as they relate to life’s lessons and what they teach us. In terms of a single life changing moment, some folks can certainly experience something like that, though I think we all have numerous epiphanies along the way. I know I’ve had many direction changing experiences which have all contributed to the man I am today. As I look back, it is easy to see them and be extremely thankful for the ones that have led me to my current station in God’s world. Over the last few years I have written much about my surprise at how fast that world is changing and how I never would have imagined much of what is occurring at the moment. From Europe, to the Middle East, to our own national dynamic, events of the greatest consequence to our posterity are definitely in play. Consequently, it is easy to be overwhelmed if you are truly concerned about the future. Searching for an understanding as well as a means by which to be part of the solutions(s) is daunting to say the least. Not surprisingly, I’ve had another one of those “epiphanies” I mentioned earlier regarding just that issue, turns out the answer is in fact, history.
Now I know I have said this many times, but the answer is much more involved. So much so that it wasn’t until two recent personal interactions and one local news article gone national, that I realized just exactly how involved. One of those interactions was with co-worker and friend “Scott” who reminded me of how the simple omission of a particular phrase with regard to one’s patriotism located within the header of my original political blog page (the new one is still under construction), was probably the reason for the recent uptick in my hate mail. The other reminded me of how some folks would lie to the “Almighty” Himself if they thought it would better their position, and moreover how that kind of unabashed vitriol usually comes at the expense of every blind fool within earshot. And finally, the story of a young woman who professes to be an atheist, with “help” from the ACLU, won her battle to remove a religious banner from the halls of the high school she attends in Cranston Rhode Island, have all caused me to believe that I may now actually “get it”.
Anyway, this posting will certainly not be ready for a bit as the content is spilling out of me like the Kool-Aid from my son’s glass as he attempts to describe his day at school using only his hands. But please stay tuned because it is sure to ignite some controversy. Truth be told, I have always taken great care to be inclusive with regard to the discussion. Admittedly however, I have also taken a pass at times when I’ve had what I perceived as a proverbial clear shot at the enemy. Not so with this coming post. If there is one thing that can now be said with clarity, it is that simply skirting the issues and causes without addressing the truth forthrightly is a luxury we no longer can afford as a nation…
Smack down…
I’m not quite sure how better to say or write it, but the numbers continue to speak for themselves. Once again, any minuscule economic improvement is almost immediately followed by the inevitable reality smack down when it comes to the Obama economy. As I predicted, jobless claims for benefits are up sharply this week. But much more alarming are the “continuing claims numbers”, which are also up again from 3.61 to 3.63 million, the highest per capita number of any American Presidency.
I think what frosts me more than anything though, is hearing the Democrats trying to cast this economic nightmare in a positive light. Abysmal retail sales at the end of the holiday shopping season only reinforce the sad reality of a failing economic plan which threatens to set our nation back 20 years. My God, how can anyone put politics in front of so menacing a situation as this???
“Clause” and effect…
I have always said that in order for us to better understand the words and meaning of our founding documents, it is necessary to “be in the heads” of the men who wrote them. Such is true for the “Establishment Clause” of the 1st Amendment. Now I will not put all of you to sleep with my interpretation of Jefferson’s “Wall of separation” letter, which was actually drafted by Madison, nor will I dissect the myriad of legal challenges to the so called “separation” which have arisen over generations. What I will say however, is that if one is a true study of history and desires to be intellectually honest, one must admit to the central place of the church and its influence within the fabric of early American history.
Mind you I am no zealot, nor am I qualified to speak to the problems of religion in our world. I am also certain that any theocratic approach to governance “applied by the hand of man” is dangerous to freedom. But it occurs to me there were some very basic foundational beliefs shared by a majority of folks back in the day which most certainly would have shaped their opinions, complete with every nuance and caveat. Having said this, and accounting for all the whims and contradictions which defined Jefferson’s life and work, I think that when one “Atheist” young person, who is most likely unsure and/or at least unclear on the many changes of opinion she will surely express in her long life, is allowed to rip the cultural and foundational rug from under the common sensibilities of the collective majority, then this can only be part of that slow and steady unraveling of our future I write about almost every day. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/01/11/federal-court-orders-rhode-island-school-to-remove-prayer/
Romney’s America…
I think Mitt Romney’s sometimes contradicting and confusing resume in many ways personifies what is troubling America today. I don’t mean this as a negative per-se, but more as a window into what I see as the nation’s posture in 2012. To put it mildly, there are far more Americans willing to turn a blind eye to societal and socioeconomic decline today, than at any time in U.S. history. “Middle of the road” politics or the so called “Independent” vote shaped the election of Barack Obama as President in 08 and will certainly factor into Election 2012. The willingness of many Americans to forego the ideals and principles of their fathers and grandfathers, by way of political correctness or some perceived social acceptance clause, has paved the way for the slow and steady erosion of our American culture, a culture that once defined “We the People” to the world. Moreover, that indifference has trickled into many important areas and aspects of our lives, as well as every corner of American government, from the halls of Congress to the Judiciary.
Now I’m not suggesting that Governor Romney is the cause exclusive of our national woes, however it is clear that the division within the Republican Party regarding the way forward is shaping the debate. In a manner of speaking, the Right/Left pull “within” the GOP mirrors what we will hear on the campaign trail once the nominee is chosen. Unfortunately this plays right into the hands of the Democrats who have no such primary or candidate vetting issues in this election cycle and are loving the head start.
Personally, I’m an old school political junkie who still believes the primaries are a mechanism to examine each candidate and their belief systems before making a decision. I’ve always thought that was the intended purpose. Sadly, the “main stream” media and the 24 hour news cycle have transformed the primary into a focused blood bath highlighting a manufactured negativity in ways it would never been highlighted before. Inevitably, it will be up to whoever emerges from the ashes to reshape the message into one which appeals to the “likely voter”, that voter who is cognizant of reality and truly concerned about their children’s America. I can only hope there are enough of those folks left to make a difference.
Reality sucks…
Whether it’s the almost $6 trillion dollars this President and Congressional Democrats have added to our children’s debt, or the 25 million now “under-employed” folks within America’s work force, or the record number of homes in foreclosure, or the rising oil and gas prices, or the 10% uptick in consumer credit card use in November/December with a matching decline in savings, or the myriad of other frightening indicators there for us to read if we only dare, it is obvious this President’s legacy is playing out long before the book is ever written.
This election is not about the next 4 years but rather the next 10, because those 10 years will certainly be the most consequential and critical in our nation’s history. Sadly, it may not be the wars sure to come as a result of the Obama Administration’s placating of our sworn enemies. No, it will however be the steady decline/erosion of the fundamental principles which have provided the foundation for our successes.
Whether you are a Republican or Democrat I ask only that you look a little closer. I ask that you set aside the partisan bickering on both sides and do your homework. The age of the internet has provided the tools necessary to do just that.
For my part, and while I remain inexorably tethered to my beliefs and ideals, I’m also convinced that we are living in desperate and dangerous times for America, and that if we ignore what is right in front of us, we do so at our nations, no, our children’s peril.
