Charity 101…

The joy of self-reliance…

The holidays are threatening to pass me by yet again. It seems our efforts to shape Christmas into what we believe will make us happy sometimes, actually end up diluting the true meaning of the holiday. Thankfully I am always able to extract something that I may relate to commemorating the momentous birth of my Lord and Savior.

I have always been one to frown upon the superficiality many often apply to this time of year with the “Black Friday” stuff and all. But it is truly heartwarming to see some folks step up and bring about the change I know is in line with the life and teachings of the Man whose birth we are about to celebrate. This includes those of different faiths whose hearts are appropriately positioned, large and squarely in the middle of their chests. Performer Dan Zanes is just such a person.

Zanes champions a cause which appears to be directly in line with the greatest charity we may bestow upon the less fortunate, that being the means by which they may be self-supporting. Sadly, the number of hungry in this world is once again on the rise and has been for the past few years. Political symptoms of this travesty aside, the fact that over 1 billion people, many of them children, will go to bed hungry this day is something Jesus would certainly have been addressing.

This brings me to (Heifer International), an organization which promotes the food source not just the food. They accept donations in order to purchase and provide life giving farm animals, which in turn provide sustainability and a transferable means of food provisions to the impoverished around the world. Now it remains admirable that we support charity(s) which give immediate and necessary food, medicine and clothing to those in need, but what could be better than giving the gift of a consistent food source that in turn would facilitate better health and a platform to produce those very same necessities of life. Moreover, one could then pass that gift on to others in need by way of the offspring of their betterment.

I do not have many “collective” thoughts about the world. This is a political distinction on my part and has to do with my ideological belief that much of the suffering in this world may be attributed to the Socialist, Communist and/or Theocratic application of government, which negates individual freedom and allows absolute and unchecked power. That discussion aside, and from a purely humanistic point of view, it is simply unconscionable that any person should go hungry in a 21st century world.

It just makes sense…

Iraqi freedom…

Our troops performed admirably and have accomplished their mission. Our brave men and women may return home with heads held high and to a well-deserved hero’s welcome. For the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and too those who will suffer the ailments of war for years to come, let us pledge our unending gratitude by way of the proper and necessary support they deserve immediately.

Iraq as a nation has elected not to be part of any “Persian Empire” as promoted by rogue Mullah’s like those who currently rule over Iran. A quarter million have signed on to protect Iraqi sovereignty from just such a threat, and the murdering tyrant who ruled over her with a bloody hand for so long is no more. The politics of the war itself will certainly be debated for generations to come. The above are facts however, and they are undeniable.

This brings me to the question of whether the President may take any credit for the victory, and for that matter whether or not he should even address our troops regarding the war in Iraq. I would only say that Barack Obama is our elected Commander-in-Chief and therefore has a “responsibility” to address and thank the brave men and women of the United States Military for their sacrifices and a job well done. I would say however, that his speech to troops at Fort Bragg the other day was certainly over the top. His soaring and majestic references to the conflict and our role in it, were clearly in direct contrast to his well-publicized positions regarding the onset of hostilities in Iraq and subsequent surge.

I would only hope politics be laid aside for the time being and the focus be squarely on the returning soldiers and their families, so they may re-acclimate and receive all they need to carry on. President Obama must understand this and be cognizant of his role. Simply put, the POTUS has every right, and certainly a responsibility, to declare victory in the name of those who fought and died in “Operation Iraqi Freedom”, but using that victory as a political tool considering his stated ideological positions is something he should consider very carefully in terms of perception as well as his legacy.

Tebow lesson…

Whether you like the game of football or not most of you have heard of Tim Tebow. The young quarterback whose life story has intrigued so many has made headlines lately because of some late game heroics. Now the heroics by themselves are not necessarily unique, but the circumstances surrounding how it all came to be have piqued folk’s interest around the world. The young Florida Gators phenom who became the first quarterback to both rush and pass for more than 20 TD’s in a season was almost aborted in the womb. His remarkable story has energized and inspired the Christian faithful (and many others), and would have been a non-fiction bestseller already if not for the most recent chapter yet to be completed.

Tebow arrived at the AFC West Denver Broncos Training Camp via the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. In 2011 he would replace Kyle Orton as the team’s starting quarterback after being called up in the second half of a game against the San Diego Chargers. Tebow nearly erased a 16 point deficit but ultimately the chargers would prevail. Nonetheless, the die had been cast and the Broncos have ridden a 6 game winning streak with Tebow at the helm to now be in contention for the play-offs. This brings me to the reason for this post.

Tebow has made no secret of his faith in Jesus Christ and how it has lifted him up personally. He has also taken great pains to not press his beliefs on those of a different stance. That said, his signature one knee prayer has both enlightened and enraged fans everywhere. Some have even called on the NFL to step in and set ground rules for “prayer” during games. To their credit, the League has opted to stay out of this fray for now. Sadly, Tebow’s simple and unassuming moment of reflection seems neither a bother nor a distraction to his team, but rather has become their rallying point. Moreover, it has become the rallying point for Bronco Nation. You see I believe that there is a deep-seated and appreciated faith in most American hearts which bubbles up when we see a successful person acknowledge that he/she is not the be all and end all of their own achievements. Consciously or unconsciously we cheer for the humble who go forward without hesitation and are then thankful if only for the chance. Tim Tebow’s prayer may not reflect your belief or lack of it, but his passion for his God tells us something about him and about ourselves in 2011.

As I navigate the holiday season and try my best to grab hold of the spirit, I am troubled by how much things have changed in just my lifetime. I catch myself staring at the folks as they push, shove and curse their way through these couple of months, and I’m floored to see and feel the angry way so many comport themselves. Regrettably, and much to my wife’s chagrin, I am often compelled to lash out at times in response. So when I returned home from the nightmare that has become Christmas Shopping in the 21st century the other night, and watched the rebroadcast of Tebow doing it again late in the fourth quarter, and then saw the thankfulness and genuine affection in his one knee prayer after the game, I thought to myself, now there’s a guy with his head squarely on his shoulders, a guy who understands the sun does not necessarily rise or set because of him, and a guy who is cognizant of this world and his place in it. Now regardless of how far Tebow goes as we get ready to close out the regular NFL season, I would ask all of you to take a good hard look at this young man’s life story and success thus far and then tell me that passionate and humble faith in a Godly power greater than our own is time wasted. Because if you can, then “We the People” and the nation which has its cultural roots firmly in the God-given strength of a free and faithful populous are most certainly in jeopardy.

“We the People” vs. “We the People”…

Reagan evoked the passion of “Americanism”…

When we look at the possible matchups for President it is striking, considering all the problems we are facing today, that the POTUS is still polling as “high” as he is. Mind you he’s still well below the magic 50% number and his negatives on things like handling the economy are growing, but it remains curious nonetheless. I would point out that Jimmy Carter was polling similarly against Ronald Reagan in 1980. That said, there is something very different going on in 2011.

It is not simply the notion that American politics should stop at the water’s edge, but more the troubling idea that a President is so compelled to highlight what “he” sees as American flaws when addressing our international counterparts. And it is not just about flying a flag or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in our schools, but rather why the calculated effort to revise, re-write and/or simply erase an ideal, that while not without trial, has transformed humanity for the better and like no other in its short 235 year history. I would also say to my Reagan friends, it is not simply a bad economy but rather a question of economic, Constitutional and social direction. There are far more folks today who have benefited from the free ride than in the early 1980’s. And still more who have opted out of the American dream in favor of the American hand out. The truth will actually shock many of you who have bothered to do your homework, but the reality is the number of Americans receiving some kind of assistance from the government is staggering and unprecedented, and there seems no end in sight. The entitlement evolution/revolution will apparently succeed where so many of our enemies have failed.

So I personally am not inclined to stare with confusion at the T.V. when I see the President polling two points ahead of Romney, because I know this election is not really about Mr. Obama. It is however about “We the People”. In the end only we can decide whether we will leave our children freedom or the chains of debt. In the end only we can decide if we wish to stop the revisionist train before it derails our future. And in the end only we can “elect” to return to success through hard work and individual achievement which knows only the boundaries of our efforts. No my friends, it is not as simple as Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative. That would be far too easy…

The Great White Hunter…

It’s tough not to make every post about this President lately. As we approach the heart of Election 2012 it will get worse. It doesn’t help that every time he opens his mouth he provides yet another opportunity for those like me to read between the “Obama lines” without care for his manufactured political prowess, and report his true motivations.

The POTUS spoke of President Roosevelt today. No, the other one. Teddy Roosevelt was indeed an antagonist of big business in his day. However, comparing his politics to that of today and to those of the current occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is like comparing apples and squash. It is true TR did not like the notion of an all-encompassing monopoly with the power to exploit an entire workforce. And while he was pretty much a “fat cat” himself, his forthright honesty and initiative were instrumental in bringing about historic regulatory measures to make sure that would not happen in the future. But that was a very long time ago and the United States of 2011 looks absolutely nothing like that of the very early 20th century. And though TR espoused a role for the federal government, he would have been appalled by the all-in, entitled, lazy, un-American and in your face approach of the Progressive Left today. Roosevelt’s so called “Progressivism” was universal and a product of his time. It was born of betterment not dependency and exclusive to the conundrums of the day. Barack Obama’s attempt to parallel his own class warfare agenda against that of TR’s is laughable and smacks of a desperate politician fighting for his political life. Disingenuous, disgraceful and dangerous come to mind as well…

Rhode Island’s Governor Scrooge…

He kinda looks like Scrooge…

I am always a little hesitant to write about my home state of Rhode Island. There are just so many topics of “disgust”. I say this with some angst because I could never leave the most beautiful state in the lower 48. It is simply our politics which continue to stink up the place…

Most recently, this was reflected in our illustrious Governor’s decision to call a Christmas tree, trimmed in the rotunda of our beautiful and historically significant state house, a “Holiday tree” instead. Now there are the obvious and national implications of this story which are being framed by the Christian faithful as attacks on Christianity, and I would not disagree with those analogies. However, the problem is the press are already beating that to death culminating with an O’Reilly exclusive which I will be sure and catch tonight. On the other hand, I have a slightly different take on Lincoln Chafee’s “angle” regarding the State House “Christmas Tree”.

For starters the Governor’s attempt to explain away his hypocrisy by invoking the non-existent “separation of church and state” thing goes down the toilet as the entire circumference of every floor surrounding the rotunda proper is traditionally adorned with the holiday decorations of many faiths and cultures, so why not Christmas? I know this because I usually attend the lighting ceremony, and I’m always interested to view all the awesome displays. Additionally, the observing of “Advent” and the Christmas holiday season has been a cultural mainstay in Rhode Island for generations and is deeply rooted in its earliest beginnings. The lighting of the tree has come to symbolize the peace and love associated with the entire season.

Now let’s talk about Lincoln Chafee the man. In the simplest possible terms, he is not his dad nor will he ever be remembered in the same light as the iconic John Chafee, revered Senator and former Governor of Rhode Island. In fact the history books will show Lincoln Chafee’s indecision and political opportunism as significant reasons for him having lost his fathers beloved Senate seat to the current Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Chafee the son possesses neither the political gravitas nor the depth of thinking his dad did, and instead has elected to grab hold of and attach himself to any and all controversial headlines to cement any sort of legacy. Even his election as Governor was notable only for the votes he did not receive as opposed to those he did.

So in the end, Rhode Island receives yet another black eye at the hands of an opportunistic “wanna be” with something to prove. Another controversy finds a home in the smallest political cesspool in the country. And another four-year term will pass while Rhode Island sinks further and further into the abyss of economic and social decay. Man I still love this place…

WARNING: RIGHT WING RANT BELOW!

P.S. Is it possible to find a more opportunistic revisionist than John Stewart. What pains me most about this idiot is that folks actually look to him for journalistic insight. “God”, yes I said “God”, please help our country!

The “Blogosphere”…

The "Blogosphere"...

Not sure I’m comfortable with the mantle of author, or even writer, as has been bestowed upon me by some. Frankly, I don’t type very well and my spelling is questionable. Though I must admit I’m often disappointed when I read some of the major newspapers and see so many grammatical and spelling issues. It seems it was not like that in the days before electronic media, but I digress. In any event, I’ve been doing this for a bit now, more out of a sense of responsibility than anything else. Nonetheless, my following continues to grow and for this reason I will continue to grow.

I was listening to the radio recently, and caught an interview with Syndicated Columnist Froma Harrop. Now I have read some of her stuff and must tell you that she writes better than she interviews. With that said, and while I read her to be a bit more Left leaning than not, she made a very good point during the one on one. She noted that with the advent of the 24 hour news cycle as well as the ability of those who wish to opine so immediate and available, the facts are often jumbled, misrepresented and sometimes even omitted. Harrop elaborated on how it was becoming harder and harder for her as a print writer to keep up. This is interesting to me because I too feel pressure to get out the next blog post even though my efforts come down squarely in the modern media category. But I think I’ve developed a following more quickly than many other blogs out there because I do not jump on the story before I know the facts. This is certainly not to say I get it right all the time. Many of my readers remind of that every day. But it does lend some credibility to Harrop’s premise that there are major differences between “real journalism” and the “blogosphere”.

Now this also doesn’t mean that the so-called “main stream press” hasn’t taken a well-deserved hit in the credibility department recently. I think it’s even fair to say that we are witnessing the death of a free and unbiased press these days. Consequently, I am determined not to make this blog of mine a posting wall for my ideological ranting, and I have been quick to post “disclaimers” when I’m anticipating a “Right wing moment”. However, in an age of transformation and generational disconnect such as we are living in, I am happy to have both forms of media working in the arena of ideas. It is incumbent upon the “information consumer” however, to do his or her own due diligence before making a decision. There is simply no longer an excuse for not having enough information. “Trust but verify”…

Gingrich magic, not magic at all…

Newt Gingrich is a hard man to like. I’m sure folks on both sides of the aisle would agree with that assertion. There is certainly a lot to look at politically as we vet this seasoned politician. However, America is in dire straits. Our economy is in shambles, a good part of the world has lost faith in our initiatives as well as the idea that we may rise above it all and the rest simply want to kill us. Americans who give a damn are looking for a straight shooter who is not hobbled by some past indiscretions, (as they may be seen through the eyes of opponents or political foes), to offer up thoughtful and applicable solutions to what is wrong with our ailing country. Now despite what the press would have you believe with regard to the “flavor of the month” analysis, this is the reason for the recent poll which drives away from the Romney question and instead pits Gingrich against President Obama with Gingrich winning 45 – 43. Most folks, who have a clue and are not blinded by ideology or dreams of anarchy, are beginning to understand that talk is cheap if there is no substance to the words.

Whether you like the former speaker or not, and whether or not you agree with his campaign offerings, you have to admit it appears he will in fact destroy the “teleprompted POTUS” in a debate if ever given the chance. Moreover, his “cool as cucumber” approach is somewhat reassuring to a staggering electorate attempting to wrap their collective arms around any candidate at the moment.

So in a contest which is shaping up to be the bloodiest and most expensive in our political history, in the end it will be, (and should be) about the facts and a realistic and doable platform that the voters feel a candidate can pull off both for the short and longer term. And with the apparent implosions of Perry and Cain, combined with the inability of the rest of the Republican field to gain any sort of traction, it is looking more and more like a fight to the finish between Romney and Gingrich. For those of you who simply must know, I am inclined to support Gingrich for the moment. But hell, that’s what primaries are for, so we can keep changing our minds…
